Language requirements and testing information

How do I fill my language requirement for my major?

Different colleges and departments at MSU have different language requirements.  There is no university language requirement; in order to find out the requirements for your major, you should contact your major advisor.

Where do I take the Spanish placement test?

Students that have studied Spanish before coming to MSU and want to continue must take the online placement exam.  You may take the placement test at the testing office, 207 Student Services, 517-355-8278.   You can also take the test online at https://ntweb11.ais.msu.edu/FLPlacement/.  Before you take the test, be sure to click on "About This Test" (located in the logo at the top of the screen). You are responsible for understanding the rules and regulations of this test.   You will be expected to enroll in the course of your tested level; exceptions are not made.

What if I’m not happy about my language placement?

Students must take the course at the level they placed into. Students cannot place lower than their original score.   Students may retake the placement exam after 6 weeks if they want a better score (higher class level).

Students placing in SPN 250 will probably have a problem enrolling.  Please contact the department for an override.  Have placementscore, PID, and proposed semester of enrollment accessible.

Heritage or native speakers of Spanish should not take the placement test.  Contact the Academic Advisor for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese if they are interested in taking a course.

How do I get an override?

Overrides will not be considered for 100- and 200-level courses by any instructor.  Watch for someone to drop the course!  Students are expected to continue to check the enrollment system for openings and register during open enrollment.

What if I have AP credit?

AP scores of 3 or better place students in 300-level  classes (eligibility for SPN 310 and SPN 330)

What if I already speak Spanish?

Students that already speak Spanish (heritage speakers) that want to take Spanish should NOT take the placement test, but should contact the Academic Advisor for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese if they are interested in taking a course.

For Portuguese:
