Spanish Major Requirements:

Major Requirements--(36- 37 credits)

Core Requirments:

  • 310 Basic Spanish Grammar (prerequisite = 202/250 or equivalent)
  • 320 Cultural Readings & Composition (prerequisite = 310 and Tier I writing requirements or equivalent)
  • 330 Phonetics & Pronunciation (prerequisite = 202/250 or equivalent)
  • 342 Media and Conversation (corequisite = 330)
  • 350 Introduction to Reading Hispanic Literature (prerequisite = 320 and Tier I writing requirement or equivalent)
  • 412 Topics in Hispanic Culture (or approved substitute) (prerequisite = 320)
  • 420 Spain and its Literature (prerequisite = 350)
  • 432 Latin America and its Literature (prerequisite = 350)
  • 440 The Structure of Spanish (prerequisite = 330 and LIN 200/401 or ROM 401)

9 credits of the following elective courses:
(Each course may be repeated for up to 9 credits)

  • 452 Topics in Spanish Language (prerequisite = 320/330 and 342) a student may earn a maximum of 9 credits for this course.
  • 462 Topics in Spanish Literature (prerequisite = 420) a student may earn a maximum of 9 credits for this course.
  • 472 Topics in the Literatures of the Americas (prerequisite = 432) a student may earn a maximum of 9 credits for this course.
  • 482 Topics in Spanish Linguistics (prerequisite = 440) a student may earn a maximum of 9 credits for this course.
  • 491 Special Topics (approval of department required)

*Exceptions: students that are heritage or native speakers or that have advanced levels of language ability may be required to complete a parallel course of study. Please see department advisor.

Experiential Component Options:

Students majoring in Spanish are expected to study abroad for at least eight weeks, but should a student be unable to meet that expectation, one of the following options must be pre-approved:

  • residence for at least one semester in La Casa, a center for cultural activities.
  • internship for at least eight weeks in a Spanish-speaking environment.
  • service learning for at least eight weeks in a Spanish-speaking environment.

Any student that cannot complete the required experiential component must enroll in SPN 492 Senior Writing Project for 1 credit.

1 Linguistics course (LIN 200, LIN 401, ROM 401, ENG 302) and SPN 330 are prerequisites for SPN 440.

Corequisite requirements: SPN 342 may be taken concurrently or after completion of SPN 330; it may not be taken before

The university Tier II Writing requirements will be fulfilled by completion of both SPN 320 and SPN 350.

The College of Arts and Letters cognate requirements must be followed: In addition to the major, students must complete two cognates of 12 credits each, with a least 3 credits in the upper division. Each cognate will be in a single discipline or thematic area. At least one of the cognates must be in a field outside the College of Arts and Letters.

Note: Students wishing to earn a Spanish Education major must apply separately for admission to the College of Education. Applications are available at the College of Education Student Affairs Office, 134 Erickson Hall. Acceptance into the program is necessary for admission into the required Education courses.

Teacher Certification Options: A disciplinary major leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree is available for teacher certification in Spanish. A disciplinary minor is also available for teacher certification in Spanish.
